AREAS OF OVERSIGHT
PREACHING: Preaches a majority of Sundays, coordinates preaching calendar, and oversees overall structure of Sunday worship services.
The pastor who has oversight of this vital task is responsible for ensuring that God’s people faithfully hear the proper exegetical explanations of the Scripture so that they may grow in their faith, grow in their knowledge of God and His Word, and receive clear guidance on how His truth is to be applied to their lives in their daily context. Core functions include: organizing the preaching calendar and proposing what set of Scriptures to preach through so as to comprehensively equip the body; preaching a majority of Sundays as compared to the other pastors who preach; and overseeing the structure of the overall worship service.
TEACHING & TRAINING: Teaches the Bible regularly in a variety of settings, assesses the fruitfulness of the church’s teaching and training efforts, and equips others who are gifted to teach.
All pastors are called to teach and train up others in the timeless truths of God’s Word. The pastor who has oversight of these efforts is focused on listening well to the entire church body in order to discern where further foundational, doctrinal, and practical training may promote a greater depth of biblical understanding and life application. Core functions include: leading by example by regularly teaching others in individual, small group, and large group settings; identifying and equipping others in the body who are gifted to teach; and regularly assessing the overall effectiveness of the church’s teaching and training efforts. Accordingly, this pastor also works closely with the Kids Church Team, the Youth 56 and Youth 712 Teams, Institute leaders, as well as the leaders of the Men’s Advance and the Women’s Retreat.
WORSHIP MUSIC: Equips, coordinates, and participates with a team of musicians to lead the church family in singing to the Lord.
The pastor who has oversight of worship, and specifically the musical components of Sunday morning services, is particularly gifted and trained to lead the church body to focus on bringing praise to the Lord in a manner that is authentic, Christ-centered, and congregational, so that He may be glorified above all else. Core functions include: setting the tone of worship in both song selection and composition; identifying, training, and equipping others who have both musical expertise and a genuine heart for the Lord; and personally participating (at least to some extent) in the team that leads worship.
